HISTORY OF OUR FOUNDRESS

Mother Marykutty FDSHJ was born into the Puthupparambil family of Kainady, on 14 January 1937, as the fifth daughter of Thomas and Mariam, a couple noted for their deep faith and virtuous life. ‘Mariakkutty’ was welcomed into the church at baptism by Rev Fr Jacob Akkarakkalam who perhaps little realized then that the infant whom he received into the fold of the faithful would grow into a staunch soldier of Christ. This little girl’s father served as Sacristan in the church which proved a blessing for ‘Mariakkutty’ who attended Holy Mass without fail every day. At the age of eight she read the autobiography of St Little Therese which helped her root deep her own bond with God and to build her spiritual castle which would bear rich fruit in future Her affinity for St Francis Xavier which she developed as she listened to homilies since childhood moulded her altruistic spiritual self.

At the age of 14 she could persuade 12 students of various faiths to stay away from a programme on atheism organised by the head of the institution and some teachers there. When she was in the X grade as per directions from the Headmistress of her school, Rev Mother Jose Mary CMC, she preached a three day retreat for about 60 students who had missed the annual retreat. These incidents point to the spiritual fire that resided within this soul, which would later blaze into a flame of love for her heavenly father.

Having completed her High school Studies, she joined the Institute of the Daughters of  Mary Help of  Christians, popularly  known as Salesian Sisters in the Province of  the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Shillong, Assam, North East India, In June 1956. She was Professed as an FMA ( Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice or Daughters of Mary Help Of Christians)  On August 5th, 1960 and was admitted to her final Vows on August 5th 1966.

Her love for her heavenly father prompted her to think of ways and means to serve the Lord and his children in a more meaningful manner, on a closer path and after about 25 years of  her service to the Lord in the North-East, she decided to form a new congregation in answer to the inspiring call she received in her heart from God her loving father while praying at the Mavula Sacred Heart Covent in Shillong in the year 1972. After 9 years of fervent prayer, fasting and reflection she left the Salesian congregation to form the new congregation Fervent Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus consecrating herself  to God as Marykutty of  the Sacred Heart through Archbishop Antony Padiayra of Changanacherry, on 18 April 1981.

Mother Marykutty consumed by total love for her heavenly “daddy’ laid down a scheme for such activities with the only desire to ever stay close to the divine presence that prompted her to establish this congregation. The sole passion of her soul was to maintain total and exemplary fidelity to God the father. In sincere response to this special and divine call 161 sisters work in about 6 states of  India, in the three rites of the global church spread through about ten dioceses in active and inspiring witness to the Good news. This is a response to the highest kind of love that demands total and undivided allegiance and commitment. She walked the challenging path of love in child like simplicity and innocence. This filled her with an enviable closeness and oneness with God, unshakeable and firm commitment and the courageous response that she gave to her affectionate father in heaven in whose love she basked. The blessings that the congregation received through this fervent and loving daughter have been countless. On December 26, 2014, she was called to be with her heavenly Daddy to enjoy the promise of eternal happiness. Each FDSHJ bows her head in tremendous gratitude and esteem in honor of this inspiring life and gift to the world.
